Work-Based Learning

Temporary positions within an organization that allow students to gain practical experience in a specific field. Internships may be paid or unpaid and typically last for one semester.

• Provides hands-on experience, industry connections and insight into a particular career.
• Example: A high school student interested in architecture might intern at a local firm, assisting with drafting, design, and client meetings under the guidance of experienced mentors.
• Example: A student interested in becoming a chef might be paired with a local restaurant owner to practice culinary skills, learn to work in a professional kitchen and share insights into running a successful food business.

Structured programs that provide on-the-job training, typically in skilled trades. Apprenticeships are often longer-term and may lead to certification, licensure or future employment. These can be paid or unpaid.

• Students earn while they learn, gain industry-recognized credentials and develop specific trade skills.
• Example: A student interested in becoming an electrician could participate in an apprenticeship program with a local electrical contractor, gaining hands-on experience in wiring, installing fixtures and reading blueprints while attending related classes at Legacy or as a part of their year 2 progression.
• Example: A high school student interested in advanced manufacturing might participate in a youth apprenticeship program with a local manufacturing company, working part-time while earning high school credits and learning industry-specific skills.

Short-term experience where students observe professionals in their work environment to understand the responsibilities and skills required for a particular job.

• Provides exposure to different careers and helps students make informed decisions about their future career paths.
• Example: A student interested in an aviation career might spend a couple of days shadowing a pilot, mechanic or flight control operator at an airport to understand the daily responsibilities of each profession.
• Example: Future Educators spend time working in elementary or middle schools, shadowing teachers and working with students, maybe even providing small group support.

Student-led enterprises that operate within the school, allowing students to manage real projects or trades and learn applicable skills.

• Hands-on experience in operations, leadership and management.
• Example: A group of students might run a school cafe/marketplace that sells food, allowing them to learn about inventory management, marketing, customer service and costing/budgeting.
• Example: A company might provide conduit that needs bending, or other prefab work for an actual installation that students can work on at Legacy, with regular quality and progress checks from the industry partner.

Combines community service with academic instruction, focusing on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility.

• Improves academic learning, promotes personal growth and benefits the community.
• Example: Students might develop and implement a project to feed those in need at a local food bank, integrating lessons on food and menu preparation, hospitality and service as part of their curriculum.

Practical, supervised training experiences in healthcare settings, typically for students interested in medical or allied health careers.

• Provides real-world experience in patient care, often required for certification or licensure.
• Example: A student enrolled in a Health Sciences program might complete clinical rotations at a local nursing home, assisting with patient care under the supervision of licensed healthcare professionals.

Comprehensive projects that serve as a culminating academic and experiential learning activity, often involving community partnerships. Students design a project in collaboration with their teacher & community/industry mentor.

• Encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world application of academic knowledge.
• Example: A student interested in robotics might complete a capstone project where they design and fabricate a trade show robot, involving research, interviews with industry experts, and the development of a robot for a national competition.
